Researchers built a browser game, Bad News, that lets you play a fake-news tycoon and learn the manipulation tricks from the inside. Just 15 minutes of it measurably reduced how easily people were fooled afterward, and it worked across the entire political spectrum, left and right alike (Roozenbeek & van der Linden, 2019).
You cannot un-hear a lie. But you can be made immune to it before it arrives.
Why debunking barely works
Debunking means correcting a lie after it has spread. It is what we usually do, and it is weak:
- Once a lie is in your memory, it is sticky. Corrections rarely scrub it out fully.
- Every time you repeat a lie to correct it, you make it feel more familiar, and familiar feels true.
- You are always behind. There are infinite lies and a handful of fact-checkers. Endless whack-a-mole.
Debunking is defense after the infection. The better idea is immunity before.
The vaccine idea
In 1961, psychologist William McGuire noticed that minds resist persuasion the way bodies resist disease:
- A vaccine gives your body a weakened dose of a virus, so it builds antibodies for the real thing.
- A mental vaccine gives you a weakened dose of a manipulative argument, plus the refutation, so your mind builds “antibodies” against the real manipulation later.
That is inoculation theory. Aimed at misinformation, it is called prebunking: building resistance before exposure, not after.
A good prebunk needs two ingredients:
- Forewarning: “Someone is about to try to manipulate you.” Just knowing an attack is coming raises your guard.
- A weakened dose plus refutation: a small, defused example of the trick, and a clear explanation of how it fools people.
The clever part: vaccinate against the trick
You cannot debunk every individual falsehood, there are too many. But you can teach the manipulation techniques once.
- Learn to spot emotional triggering, false dilemmas, and fake experts, and you are protected against every lie that uses them.
- It is a broad-spectrum vaccine: one dose, endless variants covered.
Debunking fights lies one at a time. Prebunking builds immunity to the whole family at once.
You have already been vaccinated
Here is the quiet payoff of this entire part. Everything you just read, the BITE model, Lifton, the staircase, the propaganda tricks, the laundering machine, was itself an inoculation.
You have now seen weakened doses of all of it, each one refuted. Your antibodies are made.
Why this matters
- Prevention beats correction. It is far easier to not believe a lie than to un-believe one. Get to the mind before the manipulator does.
- Teach the trick, not just the fact. Correcting one falsehood helps once. Naming the tactic protects forever.
- The best defense is knowing you’re a target. Simply expecting manipulation, staying a little suspicious of what moves you, is half the immunity.
You cannot fact-check the whole world. But you can build a mind that the tricks bounce off of.
