Distance From Zero
Absolute value answers one question: how far is this number from zero?
We write it with vertical bars:
Examples

|---|---|---|
| 5 is 5 units from zero | ||
| -5 is also 5 units from zero | ||
| 0 is 0 units from zero |
Absolute value strips away the sign. It tells you how far, not which direction.
